Internet Safety Tips

by Ed Schmidt

May 10, 2009

Never give out your address, phone number, or other personal information, including where you go to school.

Trust your instincts. If you feel nervous about anything online, tell your teacher or parents about it.

The difference between right and wrong is the same on the Internet as it is in real life.

Know that rules for good behavior don't change just because you're on a computer.

Reminder: Making illegal copies of other people's work—music, games & programs—is like stealing from a store.

You should never meet online friends in person. Online friends may not be who they say they are.

Not everything you read or see online is true. Ask your parents or teacher if you're not sure.

If an online friend is using inappropriate language, report it to your parents or teacher.

Never post pictures of yourself or friends on the internet without your parents permission.

Never download files off the internet on a school computer, it probably has a virus in it.

If you come across a page or a photo that is inappropriate or makes you feel uncomfortable, tell your parents.

Do not respond to messages or emails that are inappropriate, mean, or make you feel uncomfortable.

Talk to your parents about setting up rules and boundaries around using the internet and follow them closely.

Do not give your password to anyone except a responsible adult in your family.

Do not buy anything off the Internet unless your parents help you with the transaction.

Be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.

Check with your parents before downloading or installing software on your home computer.

Doing foolish activities on your home computer can jeopardize your family's privacy.

ALWAYS Get permission from your parents if you want to register for something or enter a contest online.

When online, avoid people who ask too many personal questions.
If you find yourself in an Adults-Only place, or anywhere you think you shouldn't be, leave!

Never use someone elses online account.

NEVER logon to Paypal or Ebay by clicking on a link contained in an email.

NEVER respond to emails in which you are asked to help transfer large sums of money.

NEVER logon to any banking institution from a link contained in an email.
