Tips for safer surfing
- Use a firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software and keep it up-to-date
- Keep your operating system, browser and other software up-to-date and patched
- Don’t open email attachments or click on an email link from unknown senders
- Scan all email attachments and downloads with anti-virus software
- Don’t download and install programs of unknown origin
- Disable Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX if possible
- Backup critical data often
- Perform regular maintenance on your computer like disk cleanup and defragmentation
- Create a boot disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised
